Research indicates that effective communication between medical staff and patients is associated with many positive patient outcomes, but few studies have examined the impact of ecological factors (e.g., hospital size, local demographics) on patient-reported satisfaction with physician and nurse communication. Given the current focus on improving patient satisfaction in hospitals across the US, understanding these factors is critical to interpreting patient satisfaction and improving patient-centred communication, particularly in diverse and dense populations. The aforementioned factors should be considered when interpreting patient satisfaction with physician and nurse communication and designing multi-level strategies to improve patient-centred communication.
