Introduction: Psoriasis is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory, non-infectious skin disease characterised by increased proliferation of keratinocytes, leading to a significant decrease in somatic functioning and quality of life for patients.
Purpose of the work: To determine the answer to the question of which psychological factors significantly affect psoriasis patients' sense of quality of life.
Material and methods: The study included a group of 51 psoriasis patients (27 females and 24 males) who completed the Schalock Quality of Life Questionnaire (KPJŻ) (including assessment of the index: General, Satisfaction, Ability/Productivity, Actionability/Independence, Community Belonging/Integration with Community), NEO-FFI Personality Inventory (including assessment of subscales: Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness), Self-Worth of Illness Scale (SOWC) and the Self-Worth of Illness Support Scale (SWCh).
Results: The KPJŻ General Index correlated negatively with neuroticism in psoriasis patients (r=-0.59, p=0.003) and positively with extraversion (r=0.59, p=0.003). The variable Satisfaction of the NSS correlated negatively with neuroticism (r=-0.53, p=0.01). The variables Ability, Possibility and Belongingness of the NSS correlated positively with extraversion (r=0.49, p=0.017; r=0.45, p=0.03 and r=0.44, p=0.03, respectively). The NSSP Possibility Index correlated with the variables Threat, Obstacle/Loss, Significance in the SOWC (r=-0.56, p=0.01; r=-0.58, p=0.01; r=-0.48, p=0.04, respectively). The KPJŻ General Index correlated with Emotional Support (r=0.57, p=0.01). The Satisfaction index KPJŻ correlated with the variables Instrumental, Informational, Emotional and General Support in SWCh (r=0.47, p=0.04; r=0.56, p=0.01; r=0.69, p=0.001; r=0.57, p=0.01, respectively). The index of the Ability of SWCh correlated with Informational, Emotional and General Support (r=0.47, p=0.04; r=0.64, p=0.003; r=0.50, p=0.03, respectively).
Conclusions: The results obtained justify the advisability of including psoriatic patients in psychological interventions aimed at shaping selected personality traits that could arouse motivation to act, cope with negative emotions and prove helpful in adapting the patient to the situation of the disease, thus increasing their sense of quality of life.
