The changing pattern in the doctor-patient relationship is becoming an increasing challenge for healthcare professionals. It is believed that for a healthy and effective doctor-patient relationship, trust and communication play a key role. The aim of this literature review was to gather knowledge and concepts regarding communication and trust in the doctor-patient relationship and their impact on patient satisfaction and perceived quality of healthcare services. All reviewed articles showed that both trust and communication are positively related to patient satisfaction and perceived quality of health services in terms of improved adherence to medical recommendations and compliance with medical advice. Patient-centred communication with two-way conversation using open-ended questions leads to better communication. Shared decision-making leads to better management and a greater chance of adherence to treatment. Current evidence suggests that a patient-centred approach with effective communication skills and trust leads to better management and higher patient satisfaction. This is associated with better treatment adherence, better health outcomes and better perceived quality of health services.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
