These were outsiders, and their presence was initially opposed by some in the medical community, but over time they were integrated into institutions that many initially criticised. This work changed medical practice, but it also required compromises and intellectual costs. Also, the successful integration of bioethics was partly based on structural features of post-war medicine without a clear counterpart in contemporary neuroscience. New and imaginative approaches will also be needed for neuroethics.
